In a study by Gregorova et al. (2025), researchers investigated the role of microRNAs in the progression of multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. They analyzed the expression of microRNAs in bone marrow plasma from patients with multiple myeloma, extramedullary disease, and plasma cell leukemia. The study identified 42 microRNAs that were significantly dysregulated among the patient subgroups. Notably, four microRNAs (miR-140-3p, miR-584-5p, miR-191-5p, and miR-143-3p) were found to be elevated in multiple myeloma patients when compared to those with more aggressive forms of the disease.

Further analysis showed significant correlations between the expression of these microRNAs and the patients' clinical characteristics, as well as flow cytometry parameters, which are measures of cell characteristics. These findings suggest that changes in microRNA levels could be contributing to the progression of multiple myeloma, and they may serve as potential markers for disease status or targets for new treatments. Gregorova et al. confirmed these results using RT-qPCR, a technique for measuring the amount of specific microRNAs, thereby validating the initial findings from their RNA sequencing approach.
